देशाची आर्थिक प्रगती व्हावी असे सर्व नागरिकांना वाटणे सहाजिक आहे. अर्थकारणामुळे मिळणारा रोजगार, समृद्धी यासाठी सर्वांनाच आर्थिक प्रगती हवी हवीशी वाटते. आर्थिक प्रगती होताना, त्याचा दिर्घकाळात समाजावर, निसर्गावर, वातावरणावर दुष्परिणाम होणार नाही याची काळजी घेणे महत्वाचे आहे. मनुष्याच्या भावी पिढ्यांना पाणी, शुद्ध हवा, योग्य वातावरण मिळत रहावे अशी भावना मनात रुजणे महत्वाचे आहे. वाढत्या आर्थिक प्रगतीमुळे नैसर्गिक संपदेवर ताण येतो. प्रगतीसाठी प्रदुषण होते. जंगले, माळराने, व इतर अधिवास नष्ट होतात. वसुंधरेवर रहाणाऱ्या इतर जीवांचा मात्र मनुष्य फारसा विचार करत नाही. आर्थिक प्रगती करताना, मनुष्य निसर्गाची हानी करत आहे. मुळताच माणसाला निसर्गाचे महत्व समजणे हे सध्याच्या आपल्या प्रगत जीवनशैली मुळे अवघड झाले आहे. आर्थिक प्रगती, समाजाची प्रगती व निसर्ग संपदेची निगा, यांचा समतोल राखणे काळाची गरज आहे.
सह्याद्री (पश्चिम घाट) हा एक नैसर्गिक संपदेचा, वैविध्यतेचा, भौगोलिक व ऐतिहासिक ठेवा आहे. वाढत्या मानवी अतिक्रमणाचा, सह्याद्रीच्या विविध घटकांवर होणारा दुष्परिणाम भविष्यात आपल्यालाच धोका निर्माण करेल, यात शंका नाही. शुद्ध पाणी, हवा व उर्जा, भावी पिढीला मिळण्यासाठी, नंद्यांचे उगम असलेला सह्याद्री व त्याभागातील जंगले टिकवणे महत्वाचे आहे. सह्याद्रीच्या महत्वाच्या घटकांचे महत्व छायाचित्रांद्वारे प्रकट करण्याचा मी येथे प्रयत्न केला आहे. येथील पक्षी, प्राणी, वनस्पती, अधिवास, किल्ले व लेणी अशा विविध विषयांबद्दल आपण समजुन घेऊ.

As the economic development has taken the center stage, the balance between the environmental sustenance and socio economic development will be under the scanner. As most experts with balanced views have proclaimed, Indian wildlife and ecological system sustenance will be under threat, unless precautions are taken with the help of appropriate research and long term national interests. As we encounter the economic development, many habitats which indirectly or directly help sustainable development will be damaged. The awareness to gauge the success by sustainable development and not by year to year growth is a distant dream any environmentalist will assume in current scenario.
Western ghats, or Sahyadri as we all call it as, is a treasure trove of spectacular landscapes, biodiversity, flora, fauna, some amazing geological wonders and man made monuments. With the increasing pressure from human encroachment, all these elements are under stress and in turn are under depletion. Western ghats should be left untouched by human beings, to protect their future generations from getting short of resources, such as water, energy and clean air. The important elements of western ghats, which need protection are highlighted in the new version of Photo journal, Me Sahyadri Magazine. The current issue has some photographs and information about the herostone monuments (Veergal) from the north Western Ghats.

वीरगळ हे एक स्मारक असते. एखाद्या शूर वीराच्या स्मरणार्थ हे स्मारक उभे केलेले असते. शूर वीर पुरुष अथवा स्त्री ने कोणत्या कारणास्तव आपले प्राण दिले याचे स्पष्टीकरण आपल्याला बहुतांश वीरगळीमध्ये पहावयास मिळते. राजासाठी लढाई करताना, चोरांपासुन गावातील गुरांचे रक्षण करताना, शिकार करताना, स्त्रीयांचे रक्षण करताना व इतर अनेक कारणास्तव वीर मरण प्राप्त झाल्यावर स्मरणार्थ वीरगळी उभारलेल्या दिसतात. वीरगळी युद्धाच्या ठिकाणी अथवा देवळाजवळ, गावात आढळतात. भारताच्या विविध राज्यांमध्ये विविध आकाराच्या व रचना असलेल्या वीरगळी आढळतात. बहुतांश वीरगळी इसविसन पूर्व ३०० ते इसविसन नंतर १८०० या काळात उभारलेल्या असाव्यात.
बहुतांशः वीरगळींवर तीन ते पाच चित्र पट कोरलेले आढळतात. सर्वात खालच्या पटावर लढाईचे चित्र कोरलेले असते. यात लढाईचे कारण स्पष्ट होते. मधल्या पटावर वीर देवदूत अथवा अप्सरांबरोबर स्वर्गरोहण करत असल्याचे चित्र कोरलेले असते. सर्वात वरच्या पटावर वीर देवासमोर पुजा करत असल्याचे चित्र कोरलेले असते.
कर्नाटक राज्यात बऱ्याच वीरगळींवर शिलालेख आढळतात. महराष्ट्रात काही तुरळक अपवाद वगळता वीरगळींवर शिलालेख आढळत नाहीत. महाराष्ट्रात बऱ्याच ठिकाणी वीरगळींवर एकच पट पहायला मिळतो. या वीरगळींवर वीराचे चित्र कोरलेले आढळते.
आपल्या महाराष्ट्रात बहुतांशः वीरगळी गावात, देवळाजवळ, माळरानावर उघड़्यावर पडलेल्या दिसतात. उन, पाऊस, वारा यामुळे वीरगळींची झीज होते. काही गावात वीरगळी जतन केलेल्या दिसतात तर काही ठिकाणी वीरगळींचा अर्थ न उमगल्याने त्या उपेक्षित आणी चुकीच्या ठिकाणी पडलेल्या/वापरलेल्या दिसतात. प्रबोधनासाठी वीरगळींचे महत्व समजावुन सांगता येईल असे एक लहान माहिती पत्रक बनवण्याचे मी ठरवले आहे. इच्छुकांनी यासाठी माहिती, कल्पना आणी छायाचित्रे द्यावीत अशी नम्र विनंती आहे. या चित्र निबंधात अहमदनगर जिल्ह्यातील रतनवाडी येथील वीरगळींची चित्रे दाखवली आहेत.
रतनवाडी च्या अमृतेश्वर मंदिराच्या मंडपाच्या छतामध्ये या वीरगळी पहावयास मिळतात. काही वर्षांपूर्वी गावकऱ्यांनी मंदिराच्या मंडपाच्या जिर्णोद्धारासाठी येथील वीरगळी छत म्हणुन वापरल्या आहेत. दूर्दैवाने या अप्रतिम वीरगळींच्या इतर तीन बाजु आपल्याला पहायला मिळत नाहीत. वीरगळींचे महत्व माहित नसल्याने वीरगळींचा सोयीस्कर वापर झालेला दिसतो.

Hero stone is a memorial made of stone. It is dedicated to a brave man or woman who sacrificed his or her life for the cause of king or public in war, battlefield; cattle raids and safeguarding life and dignity of women from miscreants. In hero’s commemoration, the village men or his relatives erected a hero stone in front of the temple or in the village forum.
In India, herostones were erected between 3rd century BC and 18th century AD. The herostones can be seen in states of Rajasthan, Gujrat, Madhyapradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Tamilnadu, Kerala and other states.
The herostones in India often carry bas-relief panels with figures and ornamentation carved on the stone. Some of the herostones also have the inscriptions.
The herostones found in Mahaharashtra do not have inscriptions with few exceptions. In Maharashtra hero stones are called as Veergal in Marathi.
The largest number of Hero stones are found in state of Karnataka. The hero stones are called as Veeragallu in Kannada.
A hero stone is usually divided into three panels. Occasionally the hero stone has four or five panels. However some hero stones are simple herostones with a single panel showing the image of the hero.
The lower panels of Hero stone displays battle scenes, or the event in which the hero died. This section generally depicts the reason for his /her death. The middle panel depicts the hero being lifted towards the heaven accompanied by angels and the upper panel usually depicts the hero, worshipping a deity such as Shiva linga.
In this photoessay let us have a look at few Hero stones from the Ratanwadi village, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. Here the Hero stones have been used in repair of the main Amruteshwar temple mandap. Most of these Herostones have four sides but we can not see all the four sides of these herostones. This is an example of lack of knowledge of the significance of Hero stones on the part of the villagers. They could have used stone slabs as the ceiling of the temple instead of Hero stones.
